Inside the Crochet Kitten Studio

Last weekend The Animator went to one of those estate sales that is a treasure hunter's dream: four floors of a lifetime of consumerism, there for the taking. While he (as always) was on the prowl for vintage video game treasures, the one thing that blew him away about this particular estate was the realization that the previous owner was an enthusiastic crafter. Not only did she have a room set up as a craft room, but she also had an entirely separate room set up as what appeared to be retail space, complete with glass display cases and credit card swipers. This was home entrepreneurialism at its finest.

Unfortunately, The Animator was unable to get proper photos for documentation (thanks, Apple, for your battery-draining iPhone hardware), but it got us thinking about how delightful it is to explore other people's spaces. The home says so much about a person, and yet it's not often that one finds oneself invited into the more intimate parts of one's home.

And so today we'd like to invite you into the Crochet Kitten Studio.

Our studio is in the back room of the basement in our home. It is set up to do double-duty as both crafting and dancing space. Since The Animator's Wife is a belly dancer, we decorated it with a harem theme in mind. It's one of only two rooms in the house where no pets are allowed (the second being The Animator's office), as we try to keep our yarns and products free of pet dander.

We have plenty of shelving for our ever-growing yarn inventory...

...a cozy reading/crochet corner, complete with electric fireplace (because our basement gets downright frigid!)...

...a sewing closet that doesn't get much use at the moment thanks to the time demands of raising a preschooler...

...a play closet for said preschooler to work on her own craft projects, complete with chalkboard walls...

All painting of our studio, incidentally, was done by our friends Closet Prep & Paint.

...and finally, a wide open dance space with full length mirror for dance practice.

What we love most about this space is that it's not only kid-friendly (in addition to crafting, Little Lovely also loves to practice dancing down here with The Animator's Wife), but it's our own special place in there world where we can hide and work on our dreams.
